Katerina Aghelaki Rooke
Katerina Angelaki-Rooke was born in Athens in February, 1939. She had a strong affinity for Nikos Kazantzakis, who was a friend of her father. At the age of 17, she published her poem “Loneliness” in the journal “New Era” after her mentor, Nikos Kazantzakis, encouraged her to do so. He himself wrote to John Goudelis, the director of the “New Era” the following words: “Please, publish this poem! It has been written by a girl, who has not yet finished high school. It is the most beautiful poem I have ever read!”. Since then, she has been involved in poetry and in translation. This was a great entry into the realm of poetry, as she herself has stated. Articles of hers on poetry and on translation of poetry have been published in magazines and newspapers. Her work has been translated into more than ten languages and many of her poems are included in literary anthologies. C.P. Cavafy’s poetry constitutes both the beginning and the end of her work.
